Operations Workgroup
{BlurbThe aboutOperations workgroup handles the workgroup}physical site preparation and maintenance that make every event possible. They arrive early to get the site ready, managing everything from props and electric lighting to building reservations, and handle the heavy lifting of breaking everything down when the event concludes.
Purpose
The Operations Workgroup is the first to arrive on site on the Friday and the last to leave on Sunday of each event. They oversee:
- Emptying out the props shed
- Setting up the Logistics building
- Setting out electric torches and signs
- Contacting the Ranger if something goes wrong
- Lighting fires (other than candles)
- Cleaning up game on Sunday morning
- Managing A-Frame and Williams reservations
Operations Marshals
- The Operations Marshal is Chris Soukup.
- The Operations Second is Zach Goldstein.
Volunteering
Every single event Operations needs help with:
- Unloading (on Friday) and reloading (on Sunday) the prop shed
- Setting up and breaking down the Logistics building
- Sweeping and mopping the other buildings
- Walking the site on Sunday to make sure that no items are left behind
Volunteers are always needed for this, no sign up necessary. Just show up at the Logistics building at 4pm Friday for set up, and around 8am on Sunday for clean-up.
Prior to helping with site clean-up make sure you have picked up your own belongings. The last person out of each building should also make sure that building is swept.
Operations maintains the props that are stored in the props shed. This involves:
- Taking garb home to launder it
- Repairing things that are starting to suffer from wear
- Removing props from play that are no longer considered safe
You can also help maintain our relationship with the Boy Scouts by volunteering for their bi-annual "workdays", where volunteers help fix up the camp for the benefit of everyone who uses it. Ops will make a post when they are looking for volunteers to do this, and generous XP amounts are given for those that show up.
The Maplewood Construction Guild
Every shift two Operations volunteers are assigned to walk the site to empty trash, restock paper supplies, and check for safety hazards. These NPCs will refer to themselves as members of the "Maplewood Construction Guild"; if you note any issues on site, bring it to their attention. These volunteers are also doing other NPC duties as needed so if you don't see them, you can let any NPC heading back to logs know about the issue that needs attention (or tell them out of game if you see them as another NPC).
The Lamplighter's Guild
The Lamplighter's Guild is a subsection of Ops that handles the electric torches that are put up throughout site. They also bring the torches home at the end of the event and charge them so that they are ready for the next game. The Lamplighter's Guild is always in need of volunteers, contact the Ops Marshal or the Second for more information.
The Props Shed
The Props Shed is a shed outside of the entrance to the Spinning Jenny that is closest to the parking lot. This building belongs to Kingdoms of Novitas, and the Boy Scouts let us keep it there to store our things. It is kept locked between events; the key is kept by the Ops Marshal or the Second .
Each group is allowed to keep one tote of encampment or other items in the props shed at a time. The tote should be an 18 gallon Rubbermaid Rough Neck tote. There are no color requirements. If you would like a printed and laminated label but don't have the supplies to do this yourself speak to shed staff, who will be happy to do it for you.
Totes must be picked up before the game starts at 9pm on Friday and dropped off before 10:30 on Sunday. Any tote that is left abandoned over multiple games, that is in disrepair, or otherwise causing issues may get removed from the shed. If you are not available to get the tote, speak to the Operations Marshals or have a designated individual pick it up.
